Back in March 2017, when Britain was celebrating National Science and Engineering Week, every student bar our Year 11 entered the ‘Young Engineer Leader Award for STEM’ competition, as run by the Young Engineers charity.

The theme for this year’s Award was:
If you were an engineer what would you do?

The competition involved three parts:
1.    Students had to think of an invention that has never been made before.
2.    They then had to fill an A4 sheet with labelled diagrams that explained their invention, informing about how it worked, what is was made of, who would use it, etc.
3.    Students then had to write a ‘Letter of application’ that explained how to use the invention, where, by whom, etc.

I had the pleasure to read every single entry, and, as a school we sent off nearly 600 entries! This was a fantastic example of school-wide participation, as entries ranged from Year 1, up to Year 10.

I am delighted to announce that Holly (in ‘Seals’ class), and Emily (in ‘Octopus’ class) have been selected as ‘Year Group’ winners in the competition. Mr Jackson joined the Infants for their Assembly last week, and, with Miss Lewis. presented both Holly and Emily with their winning certificates and a STEM-related prize.

The winning pieces of work will be on display at the Public Exhibition at the University of Southampton (Boldrewood Campus, Burgess Road, SO16 7QF),    as part of the Primary Engineer Leaders Award. The dates and times of the Exhibition are:

Friday, 16 June – 9.30am to 4.30pm
