Mayfield celebrated this year’s World Book Day in style. It truly was an ‘all through’ school event with participants from the Nursery right through to the Senior Section.
In Little Sunbeams Nursery the children dressed as their favourite book characters whilst their teachers went to town with costumes related to the ‘Dinosaurs Love Underpants’ theme that the nursery children are looking at this term. The children created an interactive display with a huge collage dinosaur where the children can change the underpants on the dinosaur each day. Helping the children to make decisions and creating their own story using the display board which is based around the book.
The Little Sunbeams Pre-School children and staff proudly dressed for the occasion and spent time talking about all the characters the children came dressed as, as well as discussing their favourite books. The Pre-School children did a tour of the school to show off their wonderful costumes.
There were lots of things happening down in the Infants Section too. Pupils and staff came dressed as their favourite book characters and we had The Cat in the Hat with Thing 1 and Thing 2 in Jellyfish class! During the day Mr Cranfield and Ms Webb from the Senior Section popped down to share stories with Year 1 and Year 2 pupils took part in a story swap. Pupils chose two stories to hear from a selection of stories read by infant staff. It was all good fun with Miss Sheppard dressed as a witch, reading a Meg and Mog story in her room. The fun did not stop there. On the day after World Book Day pupils took part in workshops delivered by Michelle from West End Theatre. Year R experienced ‘Dinosaurs and all that Rubbish’, whilst Year 1 and 2 pupils participated in ‘Where the Wild Things Live’.
The Senior Section Staff went to town on their costumes this year with characters from a wide range of books.  PE, Dance and Drama staff became the Dalmatians to Mrs Denford’s, Cruella De Vil. Senior pupils were treated to World Book Day themed starters. In each of their subject lessons, staff talked about the books that they are currently reading to highlight that people do read a wide range of books for pleasure. There were lots of competitions through the Tutor Time programme that gained merits to towards the House competition.
There was a lovely atmosphere in the Library with quizzes and competitions going on. Here, our very own World Book Day Fairy, Ms Groom was handing out book prizes. She was dressed as the main character Coraline by Neil Gaiman and went around to various classes in the school and gave out free books for different year groups. The new set of Infants had their first visit to the library and received a free book as did the pupils from the nursery.  Pupils who also correctly guessed which character Miss Groom was yesterday received three merits each!

There were several contests running in the library, including the Food Fiction quiz in which pupils had to guess the book based on the food that appeared in that book.  A big well done to the winner, Alfie Penney for getting all of the answers correct! Pupils also designed their own book cover – some of the best ones will go on the website and be awarded merits.

All pupils were given World Book Day tokens to spend as they choose on the special World Day Books. It was a really fabulous day and lots of fun! Showing that reading is not just an integral part of school and learning but also an integral part of life!

Happy reading everyone!
