Learn a language…or another one…or improve one you already speak

The DFE have awarded Portsmouth Teaching School Alliance and the University of Southampton funding to support teachers to learn a language. The funding will allow any secondary teacher (of any subject), or anyone wishing to return to the profession, to improve their language skills in a variety of languages. The highly successful Lifelong Learning team at the University of Southampton will provide language upskilling sessions. Participants will be registered as students of the university, they will have full access to the University’s virtual learning environment, to language learning software and to the physical and online resources of the Library. Some will engage in the Southampton MA Applied Linguistics for Language Learning and Teaching if they choose.

Main features of the programme

  • Available in French, German, Spanish or Mandarin Chinese.  We offer a wide range of evening classes to suit all abilities - from complete beginner to advanced conversationalist.
  • Evening classes or intensive summer courses. Evening classes are normally two hours per week over 10 weeks, and the majority are designed to develop all four language skills - speaking, understanding, reading and writing - with an emphasis on speaking and understanding in the class sessions. Intensive courses are normally 15 hours run over 10 days.
  • Courses can be run in Portsmouth, Southampton, Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Winchester or via Skype to avoid travel problems.

Courses will be available FREE to any secondary teacher, or at cost to anyone else. You can see the range of courses on offer on the Lifelong Learning website

Any of these courses is eligible for a bursary to cover the cost.

We can also provide courses specifically tailored to your needs or your school: all we need is a minimum of 6 participants per group.
