As you all know, Brian Taylor and I took our team ‘RenewAbus’ (a bus that runs solely on renewable energy resources, with a specially designed feature that has been copyrighted by Harry Elam in Y9), to the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday.

The team are = Harry Elam, Valentino Fernandez, Lois Morrow, Josie Roberts, and Maddie Threapleton

We won!!!

The team had to give a 5 minute presentation in a large conference room in Portcullis House (the ‘offices and restaurant’ for the Houses of Parliament), to an audience of over 120 people (including several MPs), and a judging panel comprising some of the UKs leading experts about sustainability, academia, business and industry fields. To put the location into perspective, Vince Cable was holding a meeting in the room next door!

Our team were impeccable throughout - I can’t praise them enough.

To put their win in perspective:

  • Over 3,900 original entrants from across all of the UK (including 150 from Mayfield).
  • 900 of these students continued to develop their Big Ideas into Business Plans with the help of business mentors.
  • Judges then shortlisted only 63 teams to present at the Regional Finals, with only 12 teams getting through the National Final in London (one school from Scotland, rest from across England)

And we won!!!

Please heap loads of praise on the students. They are so modest about it all, I don’t think they realise the enormity of their accomplishment! And as for Harrys copyrighted idea – it does NOT exist in ANY form of moving vehicle and/or device that generates electricity! He has discovered a unique niche opportunity in a world filled with technology!

The team have already been asked to present their concept at annual conferences of some big industrial firms, across the UK! Councillor Donna Jones is taking their idea to First Bus and Stagecoach, when she meets them next week, so as to help tackle air pollution in Portsmouth! Harry could potentially become very rich……….!
