My Only Limitation Is My Ambition (MOLIMA) Week

Earlier this year all of Mayfield School from Year R to Year 11 took part in the week aimed to raise aspirations and think about their futures. We had a variety of guest speakers, businesses and employers in working with pupils across the whole school. We also had the Millionaire Readers in year 7 and 8 in the secondary section go down and read with the infant pupils to talk about their passion for reading.

Some of the highlights included the Still Photographer who worked with both the Year 9 Art and Photography pupils and many have been inspired and are interested in this as a career. He also showed some work and had a question session with Year 3 and 4.

A particular highlight was from a Professional Digital Animator who works for Creative Assembly. He did a workshop with GCSE Year 9 and 10 ICT. Many of these pupils have since been working on an amination programme he showed them in their own time at home. He also did a discussion group with Year 4.

Further, we had a question and answer session with Year 8 pupils who are talented in PE and the whole of the Primary section with two Portsmouth Football Players about fitness, life as an athlete and playing football.

The whole of the Secondary school was given the chance to have a discussion session with a current Flight Attendant with Virgin who talked about the career and the chance to travel the world while working.

To add to the visits there were three members of staff from Queen Alexandra Hospital doing a question and answer session about life as a Doctor/Nurse. This was across both Year 7 and 9 and also with year 4 all pupils thoroughly enjoyed this and are interested in careers in the medical industry.

Other visits included a Storyteller who did a workshop with Year R, 1,2,3 and 4. We had the Firefighter and Police service visiting the Primary section. There was also a Science-based day with a visit from ‘Hands On’ Science Company working with Year R, 1,2, and 3. Followed by a Secondary Science teacher working with Year 4. Finally, we had an actor who has been living in LA and working in the film and television industry working with GCSE Drama classes.

Overall the whole school had the opportunity to enjoy and take part a variety of interactions with employers and businesses around a wide range of career destinations. All pupils enjoy the week and we looked forward to extending it again for next year. This is demonstrated by the competition we ran to make a poster about a career of your choice. There were so many entries certificates were awarded to all and a winner in each year group was chosen (see image attached of just a selection of the work handed in).

Any feedback or if you have a career that you feel would inspire our pupils and you are willing to come in and share this in the next Years programme of ‘My Only Limitation Is My Ambition’ week please contact [email protected]

Thank you, and I hope all the pupils enjoyed this week and all the activities they had on offer.
