On Tuesday 26th September, not only did Mayfield School but all of Europe celebrated the European Day of Languages. To expose our pupils to different European languages and culture, pupils were introduced to different countries in each department. The English department introduced Latin which some say is the basis of all languages and pupils had to crack the hidden message using the old Latin alphabet. Some pupils even got a little creative and made their own messages.
At break and lunch time, a European food stand was set-up in Café Tranquilo where all year groups were welcome to try foods from all across Europe. Pupils tried tortilla from Spain, French blue cheese from France, octopus from Italy and sweet desserts from Germany.
As an MFL department, we were all proud of the maturity and open-minded of the pupils when they were trying different foods. Some pupils really did enjoy their new food discovery!
In Year R, pupils explored Europe through a map and then created a flag for each country.
We would like to thank Asda Fratton for their kind donation of food for this event.
