Next week our November Mayfields, internal examinations, begin for Years 7 and 10.  Here's a guide of what you need to know.

Equipment:

All students should come equipped with a black pen, pencil and ruler.  Exam specific equipment, such as highlighers and calculators will be provided by we encourage pupils to bring their own.  As we take internal exams seriously, all students must remember that mobile phones should be turned off and in their bags, while 'smart' devices such as iWatches need to be removed.

Before the exam:

Pupils need to line up in the Library Quad in alpahabetical order before they are called into the hall.  Once they enter the hall they are in exam conditions and shouldn't talk.

During the exam:

Unless pupils have a genuine medical condition, we will not allow them to go to the toilet.  As with real GCSE examinations, we expect our pupils to plan to use the toilet in breaks, at lunch and before school.

Number of exams:

Pupils in Year 7 will sit four examinations:

  • One maths paper assessing the work and strands covered so far in lessons (Strands 1-3);
  • One science paper assessing the work and strands covered so far in lessons (the particle model, atoms, elements and compunds and sound);
  • Two English examinations assessing reading based on unseen texts and writing based on prompts.

Pupils in Year 10 will sit five examinations:

  • Three maths papers covering all of the GCSE content;
  • One Core Science paper covering topics covered so far;
  • One English paper looking at unseen poetry and they play covered in lessons (An Inspector Calls or Blood Brothers).

Revision tips:

For pupils in Year 7, looking back at their books for maths and science will help refresh the topics they have covered.  For English, revising punctuation rules and helpful mnemonics (like PEE, SPAMROD and AFOREST) will be helpful.

For Year 10, pupils should be starting to appraoch these examinations as they will their GCSEs.  This means revising the topics and areas in a planned and organised way.  For science and maths they should use revision resources available on Moodle, revision websites, guides and books.  Look at each topic covered and ensure they are comfortable with how they are being assessed.  For English, revising the mnemonic TWIST(ED) will help with analysing an unseen poem.  Pupils will also be expected to have learnt quotations from the play to be able to use in their answer, so watching the play, re-reading it, revising characters, themes, structures and context is all important.

Questions:

Please feel free to contact your child's subject teacher, Head of House or tutor for more support and guidance with the Mayfields.

The Mayfields are an opportunity, to show what our students know and celebrate their success, but also to support them to make even more progress.
