Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior
Theme for the week: Reflections - Our Place in the Universe
The week beginning 30th September is a week A.
A wet week saw us sadly have to postpone our House Ethos Day but the year 7 Tutor Evening which took place on Thursday as per the calendar was a lovely event. Thank you to all our parents who took the time to come to school to check on how their child has settled in and meet the staff who will be looking after them for the next five years. If you were unable to attend, then please do email your child’s tutor to make contact. A full list of tutors and contact details can be found here.
We are planning our next MOLIMA (My Only Limitation Is My Ambition) event and would love to hear from any parents or guardians who would be interesting in supporting this by coming into school and talking/sharing with our pupils their career path and choices they have made with groups of pupils from Year R to Year 11. If you are interested or have any ideas of people who might be able to inspire our young people please email Mrs Denford on email@example.com.
We are very much looking forward to our inaugural Year 8 Science Fair on Tuesday 1st October. Parents are invited to come into school from 3:30pm to 4:30pm and look at the exciting work that the pupils have produced. The work will be displayed in the Main Hall. If you are going to attend, please come into school through Reception.
We awarded Bronze Crest Awards to 20 pupils across Years 8 to 10 this week. These were gained by their participation in the Solutions for the Planet completion last term. Well done to all who took part in this. Information about this is on our website here. We are delighted that there is a video online showcasing last year’s completion final where we were crowned National Champions. Please do take the time to watch it! A link to it can be found on YouTube here.
Years 7 and 8 pupils should be working on their Prep projects. Details of these projects are on our website here. If you have any issues with Prep, please contact your child’s teacher if it is about a specific subject or your child’s tutor if it is a general issue. Homework club runs every night after school in room 151 and all pupils are welcome to attend.
A reminder to all Senior parents that we close at 1:35pm on Wednesday 2nd October to prepare for our Open Evening. If your child has been invited in to help with this event, then they must return a signed permission slip to the school. They will have been given a letter by the teacher who invited them. Thursday 3rd October is an INSET day so pupils should not be in school. All pupils are expected in at normal time on Friday 4th October. Please remember that Years 7 and 8 must arrive in school by 8:10am and Years 9, 10 and 11 should be in school no later than 8:40am.
Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary
It was the turn of Year 4 to have their Topic Hook Day this week when Zoolab visited us on Monday. The children got to see, touch and hold a range of different creatures from around the world and this gave us a tremendous insight into the animals that live in the rainforests.
It was also my pleasure to host the Reading Challenge Reward Tea this morning. It was great to see that so many children achieved this challenge by keeping their reading going over the summer. Each child who completed the Challenge will be awarded 20 Achievement Points.
As this is the final Friday of the month, we awarded the House Points Cup for September in Celebration Assembly this afternoon with Discovery winning the Cup by the narrowest of margins from Victory House. Well done to the Red House!
All pupils will have an opportunity to win more Achievement Points for their Houses next week with our first Inter-House Poetry Competition to celebrate National Poetry Day on Friday 4th October. Each child is invited to bring in a favourite poem or one that they have written themselves to share on National Poetry Day. Each class will then choose their favourite poem to be read out in Celebration Assembly next week.
We know that our pupils are hugely talented and so we want to celebrate that fact. We are creating a gallery in school and a webpage that illustrates this and so we are asking for your help. If your child has a hobby or talent that they would like to share in order to inspire others, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with a photo of them that you are happy for us to share, participating in this activity. If you could give a little bit of information about the level that they are at and any key successes that would be great. A comment from your child about why they love what they do would also be appreciated. These photos will then be displayed around school and shared online and in assembly in order to raise aspirations across the school. We are really looking forward to hearing from you!
On Monday 30th September, there is a meeting for Year 4 parents in the Dance Studio to explain the arrangements for the Minstead Residential visit in February 2020. The meeting is being repeated at 3.30 and 4.30pm so that all parents have the opportunity to attend.
On Wednesday 2nd October, we have our annual Open Afternoon for admissions into Year R and Year 3 in September 2020. We welcome all parents and pupils to come in, walk around the school, meet the staff and pupils and see all the brilliant things that happen day in, day out at our school.
This is a normal working day for the Primary section and Extra-Curricular will be operating as normal. The school is then closed to all pupils on Thursday 3rd October for an Inset Day.
As we now head into the autumn months, can you please ensure that your child brings coat to school. We try to go outside for breaktimes and playtimes in all weather conditions so that they children get to burn off energy and enjoy some fresh air. A good coat is going to be an essential item of school equipment in the forthcoming months.
Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery
As the weather is beginning to change, so could you please make sure you send our child into school with their coat and clearly label the inside so that it doesn’t go home with the wrong person.
Our topic in class will remain the same this week – ‘All About Me’ then we shall change to the theme of ‘Autumn’. We shall be working on observational drawings of each other using a variety of media and materials to create their planned effect.
Learning intentions linked to class subject:
- Label body parts;
- Comment and ask questions, developing language and self-esteem.
Letter sound is ‘D’ – please create a collage with your child relating to the letter sound – this is a lovely opportunity to develop language skills at home. Please don’t forget to bring it back into class so that we can discuss their pieces of work during circle time.
Homework will be going home each week linked to the class subject.
Dates to remember:
Inset Day - Thursday 3rd October
