12 July 2019
Mr David Jeapes - Headteacher
Following our Year R, 3 and 7 welcome evenings for new parents, I would like to welcome any new subscribers and thank you for joining our mailing list. By September 2019 we will have 290 new pupils across the school. Please do encourage as many family members as possible to visit our website and sign up for the ‘Mayfield Messenger’ which is sent out every Friday during term time.
I am delighted to report that the FOM Summer Fete 2019 was a great success. Several hundred friends and families visited and the total raised by the FOM is likely to exceed last year’s record takings – thank you! We look forward to discussing with the pupils how best this money can be spent on improving the student experience at Mayfield.
The final whole school posting will be sent out at the start of the Summer Holiday. If you have recently changed your contact details, please do update them by sending an email to our SIMS Manager, Mrs. Helen Patis on email@example.com
To help our families plan their time, please find a link to the Summer 2 calendar here. Please be aware that on the last day of this term we will run an alternative timetable. Therefore on:
Friday 19th July - pupils in ALL Years will be dismissed at 1.35pm.
No extra-curricular or ‘tea time’ clubs will run on this day.
Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior
It is with sadness that we say goodbye to our Year 6 students as they end their two weeks transition with us. They have been fabulous, and we are so looking forward to greeting them in September in their full uniform ready to become "proper" Mayfield students! The Induction evening on Tuesday went very well and it was lovely to be able to split into House groups for the latter part of the evening to begin to form the strong working relationships between parents and the House team their child belongs to.
I would also like to acknowledge how well our ex-Year 11 Young Mentors have undertaken their duties when working with the Year 6. They really have been the best group we have had so far- showing maturity in every aspect of the tasks they have undertaken. They leave us as well this week and they will truly be missed.
Our new Year 11 art and textiles students have taken their mock exam this week- no small undertaking at this time of the year! We know that experiencing the long, 10 hours exam, will stand them in good stead for their "real" final exam at the end of Year 11. Well done to all of the students who worked so hard for both days.
Can I please take the opportunity to remind you that all our pupils in Years 8-10 need to buy a new school tie for September. The tie is in House colours and will replace the House badges that the pupils currently wear. Ties are available from Skoolkit or from the school via the Tucasi/scopay which can be found on the school website here. An access code is required – if you do not yet have a code, please contact either Mrs S Manns, Finance Officer on firstname.lastname@example.org or Mr D Backhouse, Finance Assistant on Backhoused@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk
As you know we are operating our "Hot Weather Protocol" until the end of term so students do not need to wear their blazers- however all other uniform rules remain the same! Monday is our House Events day so pupils should be in PE Kit all day- with long hair tied up and no jewellery worn. Please note we are operating normal school hours on this day, so Year 8 need to arrive at 8:10am for resilience and Years 9-11 need to arrive at 8:40am. School finishes, as normal, at 3pm. Please could you ensure your child comes to school with a refillable water bottle as they are all taking part in an event and it is important for them to remain hydrated.
Pupils in Year 8 should now have submitted all their Prep work for Summer 2. The tasks for Autumn 1 will go up on to our website ready for September. In the meantime, I would strongly urge all our pupils to be reading in all their "Prep-free" time! We know that pupils that regularly read do better at school and with the long summer holiday looming, reading is the best way to keep brains active over the long break.
Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary
We have had a sport-focused week in the Primary section. On Monday, our team of Year 3 and 4 athletes took part in the Portsmouth Schools Athletics championships against teams from 12 other schools. Our Year 4 team came a superb second overall, winning the silver medals, and our Year 3 team did fantastically well to finish 4th when they were often competing against children who were a year older. Well done to both teams!
On Tuesday, the Year 3 and 4 children finished off the remaining sprints and relays from their rained off Sports Day in their PE lessons. At the end of the event, the final positions were as follows:
1st Endeavour House
2nd Discovery House
3rd Victory House
4th Intrepid House
Congratulations to the Blue House!
It was the turn of the Infant Section to have their Sports Day on Wednesday and it was another great competition. The children showed wonderful determination to take part in nine different activities to win points for their Houses and it was great that so many parents and families were able to come along to support – your encouragement was hugely appreciated by all. At the end of the morning, the final places were:
1st Intrepid House
2nd Victory House
3rd Endeavour House
4th Discovery House
Well done to the Green House on their first ever victory in a Primary Sports Day!
Next week, our focus shifts to the performing arts and we are very excited about the upcoming performances. As you may have seen at the Summer Fete, Year 3 and 4 have been working incredibly hard on their production of Matilda and we are looking forward to showing this on Monday at 5.00pm and Wednesday at 9.30am or 2pm.
On Tuesday, Year 2 will be taking their turn in the spotlight with their performance of Jonah and the Fishy Tail with shows at 9.30am or 2pm. Tickets for all of these performances can be booked via the online booking system.
Your child’s end of year report will be coming home in their bookbag this evening. This posting will also include the Phonics Screening Outcomes Report for children in Year 1 and the End of Key Stage 1 report for children in Year 2. Please see your child’s teacher if you have any queries or questions about these reports.
The Booking System for Autumn 1 Extra-Curricular is currently open to all year groups until 12pm on Monday 15th July. Bookings cannot be accepted after this time, so please make sure that you have made your bookings to avoid disappointment. The Summer 2 Prep Projects are also due in on Monday. Letters to confirm the arrangements for the Summer School from 19th to 23rd August will be sent out on Tuesday.
As we head towards the summer holidays, I would strongly encourage all children to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge. This year’s Challenge has a space theme to mark the 50th anniversary of the first Moon landings and we have a visitor coming to our assembly this week to explain how children can take part in the Challenge. More information about the Reading Challenge can be found at https://summerreadingchallenge.org.uk/ As in previous years, we will be holding a Reward Tea in September for every child who completes the Challenge.
Finally, can I remind parents that the school will close for the Summer Holidays on Friday 19th July at 1.35pm. There is no Extra-Curricular or Teatime Club on this day.
Letters sent home this week are:
- Matilda performance
- Year 4 Minstead Residential
- Year 5 Behaviour System Update letter
Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery
Graduation is on Thursday 18th July and tickets are still available for family and friends. On the day please bring your children into preschool for 9.15am to have their photograph taken, children should be wearing school uniform and school shoes please. You should then make your away around to Mayfield main entrance and come into the hall where refreshments will be available.
The last day of term will be Friday 19th July. We shall celebrate in preschool with an end of term party. The party will start at 10am till 1pm, school will then be closed for the summer break.
For those parents who will be returning, the first day back will be Wednesday 4th September.
