Mr David Jeapes - Headteacher

Hopefully, you will be aware of our invitation to a Public Information Event on Wednesday 15th May from 3:30pm in the Main Hall at Mayfield School to see the proposal we have for a new build on the existing school site. All members of our community are most welcome to this event to see and hear for yourself the exciting plans we have developed. More information can be found on our website here.

We are currently busy preparing our whole school posting which will be sent out over half term. If you have recently changed your contact details then please do alert us by sending an email to our SIMS Manager, Mrs. Helen Patis on Patis@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk

Please be aware that we have a team of staff ready to support parents, carers and pupils in a wide variety of ways. To request help, free of charge, please email the relevant person from this list.

To help our families plan their time, we have produced an extract of the school calendar containing all of the keys dates for Summer 1. This can be downloaded here.

Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior

As is now customary at Mayfield, academic promotion takes place before September and this year it will take place on Monday 24th June. This means all pupils will move up a year group on that day. Significantly, Year 10 moving into Year 11 will need to purchase a Year 11 tie. Year 11 ties can be purchased from school via the Tucasi online system.  Please email backhoused@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk for any queries regarding this. Pupils who have been made prefects will be issued with their prefect badges during our moving on assembly on Monday 24th June.

A reminder that all exam timetables are on our website here. There are a significant number of exams for Year 11 before half-term, and over half-term we are offering revision sessions to support some of the later exams. Details of these opportunities can be found here.

There is a Careers and Apprenticeship Fair covering all levels of Apprenticeships up to Degree Level at Portsmouth Football Club next Wednesday 15th May at 5pm-7pm for parents/guardians to attend. Some pupils have been invited to attend in the day, but they are also welcome back to the evening session as well. Please contact denfordr@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk for more details or see our website here.

As we hope for the warmer weather to begin in earnest, I would like to remind all parents and carers that pupils should bring a water bottle to school every day. Water and free juice are available at both break and lunch times. Please note that pupils may not bring in ‘fizzy’ drinks including Lucozade! During periods of extreme heat, we will activate a ‘hot weather’ protocol – details will be published on our website.

Pupils are reminded that if they wish to make use of our bike sheds, then they must be wearing a bicycle helmet and have working front and rear lights. We will not allow pupils to use our facilities unless they observe these basic safety requirements.

Pupils in Years 7 and 8 should be completing their Prep projects as the deadline is Monday 20th May. Information on all the projects are available on our website here.

Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary

Next week is a really important week for Year 2 as they start their Key Stage 1 SATs tests.  The dates of these tests are as follows:

Tuesday 14th May

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar

Wednesday 15th May

Reading Paper 1

Thursday 16th May

Reading Paper 2

Monday 20th May

Maths Arithmetic

Tuesday 21st May

Maths Reasoning

We do not want the children to feel anxious about taking these assessments and will be trying to keep the school day as normal as possible.  We have also tried to book some additional activities for Year 2 at this time to provide some rest and relaxation from the SATs.  These include a Dance workshop and a visit from the Fire Brigade.  Please try to keep things as normal as possible and maintain all of your normal routines like reading at home.  More information about the arrangements for the End of Key Stage 1 assessment from the recent parents’ information sessions can be found here.

Our year of sporting success continued on Friday with a superb performance by our Year 3 and 4 Athletics team at the Portsmouth Schools tournament.  This was the first time that we entered this event and we competed against teams from 12 other schools.  Our boys’ team came 2nd and girls’ team came 4th, meaning that we finished 3rd overall.  Well done to everyone who took part!  Our next sporting competition is scheduled for Friday 17th May when Year 3 and 4 will be taking part in a Tennis tournament and festival.  Good luck to the team!

This week, we have been focusing on looking smart and wearing our uniform with pride.  In particular, we have been making sure that shirts are tucked in, top buttons are done up and ties are straight.  I have noticed that some pupils have been coming to school without their House badge, which is a compulsory part of the uniform.  Please can you make sure that all children in Years 1 -4 have their House badge on every day.

At the start of this term, we had the class photographs and these are now available to order from the supplier.  On Monday, the photographers are returning to take a photo of the whole Primary section.  Please can you make sure that your child is wearing the correct uniform and that any hairbands or bows are blue, black or white – the colours of the current school tie.

The booking system for the Summer 2 Extra-Curricular clubs is scheduled to open next week.  As ever, Mrs Guy and the team have put together a fantastic range of clubs to appeal to a wide range of tastes and interests.  Extra-Curricular gives your child the opportunity to experience new activities that they may not come across in their normal school curriculum and I strongly encourage you to sign your child up to take part in these clubs.  More information about the clubs for Summer 2 can be found here.  The booking system opens at the following times:

Finally, we are saying goodbye and best wishes to Miss Beech at the end of next week as she prepares to start her maternity leave on May 17th.  We will also be welcoming Mrs Threadingham on Monday 13th May.  Mrs Threadingham will be working alongside Miss Beech for the next week to ensure a smooth transition for the children before taking over the Seahorses class until the end of term.
