7 December 2018
Mr David Jeapes - Headteacher
I do hope you had an opportunity to see our production of “Our House”. I am so grateful to all of the pupils, staff and volunteers who gave such a fantastic performance and would like to thank all who came to see the show. We are all looking forward to next year when we intend to stage “High School Musical”.
The FOM Christmas Fayre is due to take place on Friday 14th December between 3.00pm and 5.00pm. All members of our community are welcome to attend and we would be grateful if you would help us promote this event by downloading a copy of the flyer here and distribute via your social media networks.
Please be aware that during the final week of this term, all pupils will be invited to have a traditional Christmas Dinner, served in our Main Hall. We will adjust the timings of the school day to accommodate this event. More details can be found here.
We are planning to send home your child’s progress report during the Christmas Break. If you have recently moved house or changed your contact details please alert Mrs. Steph Manns on
The last day of this term is Friday 21st December. Please note that school will close early to all pupils
at 1.35pm. There will be no extra-curricular activities or tea time club on this day.
To help our families plan their time, we have produced an extract of the school calendar containing all of the keys dates for Autumn 2. This can be downloaded here.
Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior
As the Head of Seniors I was extremely proud of all the pupils who took part in Our House. Well done to everyone involved - pupils and staff. And thank you to all of them for their hard work and commitment. Our Performing Arts truly are a jewel in the Mayfield crown.
Years 7 and 8 all took their PUMA tests this week and they behaved well and were really focussed. These termly tests will chart their progress in Mathematics and will be discussed with parents when they meet at the relevant parents evening this academic year.
Our Year 8 and 9 girls had an assembly on Wednesday to launch the start of Mayfield's very own "This Girl Can" campaign. We were lucky enough to have two inspirational women, Captain D Burgess and PO S Jenkins talking to our girls about sport and what it could do for them. We have a variety of extra-curricular PE opportunities in school and the link to the programme can be found here. If there is a sport or activity not on the list that your child is interested in pursuing they should talk to their PE teacher and we will look to introduce it into the programme.
The House Councils have met recently and the feedback from their meetings was shared with the Leadership Team. They raised some good points and we will look to address them. Mr Clark-Lyons is responsible for co-ordinating the student leadership in the school so if you have any questions about prefects, young leaders, school or house council then please contact him on .
Year 7 and 8 are currently working on their Autumn 2 Prep tasks. Full details can be found here. Deadlines for each task should be recorded in your child's planner. If you have any questions regarding Prep, please contact your child's tutor in the first instance. A full list of tutors and their contact details is available here.
The weather is becoming increasingly inclement. Please encourage your child to come to school in suitable outdoor clothing. Ideally coats should be bright to make pupils highly visible. If your child is riding a bike to school, as well as a helmet, they will need lights for their bike. We want all our children to get to and from school safely.
Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary
Our special Christmas performances got off to a fantastic start on Thursday afternoon with the Year 1 and 2 Christingle Assembly. It was great that so many parents were able to join us for the afternoon and it was a magical moment when the children carried their lighted Christingles into the dark Hall. I hope that you enjoyed our first ever Christingle Assembly and I am sure that this will now become an annual event.
We have lots more performances scheduled for next week:
* The Year 4 Rainforest Topic Outcome Assembly on Monday at 2.30pm;
* The Year R Nativity Play on Wednesday at 9.30am and 2.30pm;
* The Year 3 and 4 Christmas Play on Thursday at 9.30am and 2.30pm.
Parents will be able to take their children home following the afternoon performances, although Extra-Curricular will still be running as normal on these days and the children are encouraged to stay and enjoy their normal clubs. To ensure that learning isn’t disrupted, it will not be possible to collect children from other year groups early.
At the end of each performance, we will be doing a collection. This will be split evenly between purchasing costumes and equipment to develop the Performing Arts at Mayfield and buying items to go in our hampers for homeless.
We are also looking forward to the Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day next Friday. On this day, children may choose to wear a Christmas jumper instead of their normal Mayfield jumper. The rest of their uniform should be worn as normal including the shirt, tie, blazer, shoes and trousers and skirt. There is no need to buy a Christmas jumper for this day as we will have tinsel stations set up to decorate the children’s jumper on the morning. Miss Beech and the School Council have also organised a Coffee Morning on Friday 14th December at 9.00am to support Save the Children. Please meet by the Infant Gate at 9.00am if you would like to come along.
The Booking System for Spring 1 Extra-Curricular opens next week. To support parents with more than one child in the school, we have now staggered the opening of the booking system at the following times:
* Year R clubs will open at 6pm on Monday 10th December;
* Year 1 and 2 clubs will open at 6pm on Tuesday 11th December;
* Year 3 and 4 clubs will open at 6pm on Wednesday 12th December.
As ever, Mrs Guy and team have put together a tremendous range of activities for each year group and the full programme can be found here. The booking system will close for all year groups on Monday 17th December at 12 noon.
There are a couple of other reminders as we head into the final two weeks of term:
* We are auditing our library books at the moment, so please can you make sure that any overdue library books are returned in the bookbags next week;
* Please remember to create your account on Tucasi so that you are able to make online payments for things like trips, Breakfast Club and Music lessons. Please email Mrs Manns, our Finance Officer, if you are having difficulties in accessing this system;
* Finally, the Prep projects for Autumn 2 are due in on Monday 17th December. Please see your child’s class teacher if you are unsure of this half-term’s project.
Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery
Only a few more days left until the Nativity performance! Please make sure you have purchased your tickets so that you don’t miss out on this lovely event. We will record the performance on the day and you can pre-order a copy for the cost of £5.00 – do pop into the office and speak to Mrs Buchan or myself.
We will continue with the theme ‘Christmas’, exploring ideas around the theme of giving and sharing and thanking others for what they do for us.
Learning intentions linked to class subject:
- Encourage children to appreciate the importance of thanking others;
- Letters to Santa, encouraging mark making;
- Create Christmas cards;
- Send a letter to the North Pole;
- Manipulate materials to achieve planned effect.
Letter sound for the week is ‘M’ – we look forward to your lovely creations.
A gentle reminder – please do not bring toys into school or another other items from home. We don’t have the space to store these objects and if they get misplaced at school it can cause some children to become distressed.
Finally, the children’s party is from 10am till 1pm on Friday 21st December. You will need to purchase a ticket for your children to attend.
