Mr David Jeapes - Headteacher

I am pleased to report that we have had a very smooth start to the school year. The atmosphere in lessons is very focussed and the behaviour around the school is excellent. Bearing in mind that we have welcomed 290 new pupils, this is a testament to all of the effort that staff and pupils have put into transition work.
I would like to remind all of our community that we are running a number of admission events this term. To find out more about joining Mayfield please email our admissions team on admissions@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk

Please be aware that the school receives additional funding for any pupil who:

  • is or has been eligible for free school meals in the last six years;
  • has a parent or carer in the armed services.

If you believe that your child is eligible for additional funding, then please do alert us by contacting Mrs. Jackie Hamilton on Hamilton@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk

Extra-curricular clubs are now running in all sections of the school. If your child is in the infant section, these must be booked via the ‘online booking system’ which can be found here. If your child is in the senior section, they just need to turn up on the correct day. A full programme can be found here.

Recently, the Education Funding and Skills Agency (EFSA) have informed us as to a delay in our building project. Please find here a letter which I have been asked to share with all members of our community.

Finally, I would like to highlight the work of the ‘Friends of Mayfield’ (FOM). The FOM are a group of volunteers that support the school by organising events throughout the year. They are always looking to recruit new members….even if you only have a few hours once in a while spare! If you would like to find out more, please contact them on fom@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk

To help you plan your time, we have provided a list of key dates for the Autumn 1 half term here.

Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior

A big welcome back to all the Senior Section Pupils. We have had a great start to the Autumn term and our new Year 7 have settled in to life at Mayfield well.

All pupils in the senior section are part of a ‘vertical tutor group’ with a group tutor. I would very much encourage the parents of any child who is new to the school to drop their child’s tutor an email to say “hello” or ask about how your child is settling in. A full list of senior section tutors can be found here.

We offer a range of extra-curricular clubs for our pupils to get involved in. A full schedule of these can be found here. We would love to see your child get involved fully in school life by participating in one of these clubs. If there is something that your child would like offered that currently is not, please ask them to see Mrs Cleary who organises this element of school life.

I would like to draw the attention of our Year 11 pupils to the Wilkie Scholarship. This is open to any pupil in Year 11 and provides two fully funded scholarships for pupils to attend The Portsmouth Grammar School for their Sixth Form studies. If you are interested in applying for the 2018 scholarship, then please write a letter to the Headteacher of Mayfield School outlining:

* Your significant achievements to date;

* How a place at The Portsmouth Grammar School will support your future ambitions;

* Why you are the best person for the scholarship.

Letters should be no more than 500 words and returned by Friday 14th September to Mrs. Lynne Hollis, PA to the Headteacher.

Please be aware that pupils may not use a mobile phone, ipod or similar in school and that ‘fizzy’ drinks, including Lucozade, are banned. As a school we wish to cut down on our use of plastic so we would encourage pupils to bring in a water bottle to be filled up during the day, rather than using disposable plastic cups. All Year 7 pupils were given a water bottle when they returned their information booklet during transition- this would be perfect to bring in. Water to refill bottles is available throughout the day.

Regarding attendance, if your child is absent then please contact us as soon as possible by one of the following methods.

Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary

We have had a great start to the new school year in the Primary section. Our new Reception children have settled in superbly and are coping really well with adapting to the routines of the school day. Our new Year 3 children have also had an excellent first week at Mayfield - they all look fantastic in their new uniform. It was also lovely to see the Years 1 to 4 children return on Tuesday after the summer holidays looking so smart and grown up too. Please can you continue to support our very high standards by ensuring that the children in Years 1 to 4 wear their House badges and blazers to school each day.

I would also like to thank the staff and children for the excellent Summer School that took place during the holidays. The children who attended worked really hard on keeping up their skills in English and Maths and seemed to benefit greatly from coming into school for the week.

I’m delighted to hear that lots of the children have managed to complete the ‘Mischief Makers’ Summer Reading Challenge at their local library and have therefore qualified for the reward tea with Mrs Sheppard which will be held on Wednesday 26th September. There is still time to complete the Challenge and get the Certificate or Medal that will lead to your invite to our reward tea.

We have the School Photographer visiting next week to take photos of Year R, 1 and 3 on Monday and Years 2 and 4 and sibling groups on Tuesday. Further information about how parents can buy these photographs will follow later this term.

We are really excited to announce that we have booked our first ever Residential Trip for Year 4 pupils to take place at the Minstead Study Centre in the New Forest in February 2019. We have arranged a meeting for parents on Monday 17th September at 3.30 and 4.30pm in the Mississippi classroom to explain more about the arrangements for this residential trip.

The parents of Year 2 children may have received a letter about applications for Junior School places in September 2019. Please do not be alarmed if you have received this letter as no action is required. Pupils currently in Year 2 at Mayfield DO NOT have to apply to go into Year 3; children will automatically transfer into the junior section of the school (and again into the senior section).

Finally, there are a few general reminders to help us with the smooth running of the school:

* Please can you ensure that all items of uniform are properly labelled with your child’s name.

* Please can you refrain from bringing dogs on to the school site at drop-off and pick-up times. We have some children who are scared of dogs and space in the playgrounds is limited.

Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery

I would like to welcome you all back after the Summer holidays and for those who have just joined us welcome.  The children have settled into the school routine really well and are beginning to show an understanding of class boundaries and routines.  Could I please remind you to clearly label all your children’s items of clothing to prevent any items becoming lost.

Our topic in class is ‘All About Me’.  We will be exploring and discussing are own feelings such as what makes you happy or feel sad and the feelings of others.  This will help to develop confidence in the use of language when talking about themselves and others.

Learning intentions linked to class subject:

  • To explore and discuss own feelings;
  • Extend vocabulary and confidence in the use of language;
  • Counting accurately 1-1 correspondence;
  • To look at similarities and differences.

Letter sound for the week is ‘A’.  Please could you create a collage with your children and bring into class on a Thursday so we can share these at circle time to help the children with speech sounds.

Homework and children’s library books will be sent home from next week.

Finally, a gentle reminder that school dinners should be paid on the day or by the end of the week, if not included in your school fees.  The office will be closed on Monday mornings.  The staff on the door are available to speak to you if you have any concerns or enquiries.
