This is the last Mayfield Messenger for this academic year. The next edition will be sent out on Friday 7th September. We wish you all a restful break and look forward to welcoming back all pupils at the usual times on Tuesday 4th September.
To help our families plan their time, please find a link to the Autumn 1 calendar here.
Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior
As we come to the end of the Summer Term I would like to say well done to all the pupils who have worked hard this year and made great strides in their learning. The Senior Pupils have made me proud in so many ways this year- Faith in Football, Rock Challenge, Little Shop of Horrors, Football cup victories and dance shows to name just a few! I am looking forward to even greater things from September!
As a school, we are very fortunate to have Mr Brian Wilkie MBE as an ex-pupil who every year sponsors two pupils from Mayfield to complete their Sixth Form studies at the Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS). Mr Wilkie launched the scholarship at the start of July with an assembly to the whole of Year 11. We had a significant number of pupils verbally express an interest at the time in investigating this opportunity. The next step in the process is to write a letter, of no more than 500 words, to Mr Jeapes formally expressing an interest in this opportunity. This letter must be handed into Mrs Hollis, The Headteacher’s PA, by 9 am on Friday 21st September2018. Another date for the diary is the PGS Open Morning which is on Saturday 29th September at 9:30 am. Mr Luke Rees, the Head of Sixth Form will be delighted to meet any applicants at this event.
Our Ex-Year 11 have their results day on Thursday 23rs August. Results will be available to pick up from 9am. We look forward to seeing them again on this day to celebrate their results with them.
Over the holidays I hope that all our pupils will keep their brains active- particularly by keeping up with their reading. We have put together a reading list for our new Year 7 to consider and this is on the website here. In addition, Year 11 will come back to exams in the first few weeks in Mathematics, English and Science. The timetable for these exams and revision materials can be found on our revision pages here.
As we look to getting ready for September can I please draw the attention of all parents to our uniform requirements. These are clearly displayed on our website here. It is important that all our pupils arrive at school on time on Tuesday 4th September- Years 7 and 8 by 8:10 am and Years 9-11 by 8:40 am, in full school uniform and equipped with a pen, pencil, planner (Year 7 will get theirs on that day) and a reading book.
I wish you all a restful and happy Summer and look forward to greeting all our pupils on Tuesday 4th September to welcome them back to school.
Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary
The highlight of this week was undoubtedly the Year 2 End of Key Stage 1 Celebration Performance of ‘Pirates vs Mermaids.’ I was so proud of the confidence shown by all of the children. They did incredibly well to remember all of their lines and the songs and they delivered the play superbly. It is amazing how far the children have come in their time at Mayfield!
I have also had the pleasure of meeting a group of children from each class for a Prep Reward Tea. I think that the standard of Prep this half-term was higher than ever and the creations for King of the Castle (Year 1), the Titanic (Year 2) and the Animal Fact Files (Year 3) were all absolutely fantastic.
The booking system for Autumn 1 Extra-Curricular has now closed, as has the booking system for Summer School places. If your child has been booked on to Summer School, you should have received a letter home in the book bag this week that details the arrangements for the week. The Summer School runs from 9 am till 3 pm daily with lunch and snacks provided and it is important that the children have their PE kits and water bottles with them.
This week’s assembly was taken by a visitor from the Portsmouth Library Service to introduce the Summer Reading Challenge. I would encourage all children to take part in this challenge and you can sign up from now onwards at your local library. Mrs Sheppard and Mrs Hall will be holding a Reward Tea in mid-September for every child who manages to complete the Challenge and brings in their medal or certificate. It would be great if we had even more children than last year joining us for this event.
We had out final Celebration Assembly of the year this morning. Congratulations go to Lily Pepper in Year 2 who achieved the most Achievement Points during the year and to Turtles Class for winning the overall Attendance Cup. The results of the House Competition for Primary Achievement Points were as follows:
- 1st Discovery
- 2nd Endeavour
- 3rd Victory
- 4th Intrepid
Well done to the Red House!
Finally, we also said goodbye and good luck to two members of staff today. Mrs Jones, who has been working with Year 3, has now successfully completed her Degree and is leaving to start her teaching career at another local primary school. Mrs Wheeler, Year 1 Teaching Assistant, is also leaving us to start her Teacher Training Degree at University in September. We wish both colleagues all of the best for their future careers!
Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery
What a lovely finish to our year, celebrating your children’s graduation. I would like to thank you for sharing your children with us and allowing us to be part of your family during this time. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege and we shall miss your children more than you know. Please keep in touch and let us know how they are doing.
Have a lovely summer break and for those parents who are returning to pre-school, we look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 4th September.
