Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior
Next week sees the beginning of the Year 11 final exams, starting with Computer Science and Music on Monday. Full details of the exam timetable can be found here. Mr Gibson has produced a booklet entitled “Year 11- Exam and Revision Opportunities” which can be found here. This details all the revision available at weekends etc for pupils. If you have a child in Year 11 please do read this and add revision opportunities to your child’s exam timetable which is probably safely displayed on your fridge! In the event that you have misplaced your child’s individual copy please do contact our exams officer Mrs Patis on firstname.lastname@example.org and she will be able to provide you with another copy. I would like to take this opportunity to wish each one of our Year 11 the very best of luck for these exams and I hope they enjoy showing off what they know.
As you are aware we have made the Hampshire Cup Finals with our Year 8, 9 and 10 boys football teams! These matches will be played at Fratton Park in a thrilling evening of football on Wednesday 23rd May.

Having watched all our teams in action in the Portsmouth Cup Finals I know it will be a thrilling evening’s entertainment. Please do come along and support Mayfield if you are able to on the night.
As is now customary at Mayfield, academic promotion will take place on Monday 25th June 2018. This means all Senior pupils will move up a year group on that day. Significantly, Year 10 moving into Year 11 will need to change their ties. Year 11 ties can be purchased from school for £5 or from our uniform supplier, Penelope Ann. Pupils who have been made prefects will swap their new Year 11 tie for one of our coveted red prefect ties during our moving on assembly on Monday 25th June.
With the warmer weather upon us, I would like to remind all parents and carers that pupils should bring a water bottle to school every day. Water and free squash is available at both break and lunch times. Please note that pupils may not bring in ‘fizzy’ drinks including Lucozade! During periods of extreme heat, we will activate a ‘hot weather’ protocol – details will be published on our website should this become necessary.
Pupils are reminded that if they wish to make use of our bike sheds, then they must be wearing a bicycle helmet and have working front and rear lights. We will not allow pupils to use our facilities unless they observe these basic safety requirements.
Could I please remind parents again that our school policy states that haircuts should not be “extreme”. Hair is not allowed to be very short and should not be cut lower than a grade 3 in any part. Any pupil with very short hair or other extreme cuts will not be allowed in general circulation until it is appropriate.
Years 7 and 8 should be completing their Prep projects ready to hand in before half-term. Details of the projects can be found on the website here. We have finally finished counting the donations from the Sponsored Walk and I’m delighted to announce that we raised £2,045 that is going to be split equally between the Defibrillator Appeal and Sports Relief. Thank you for your generous support of these worthwhile causes!
It was a pleasure to welcome the parents of Year R to the Royal Wedding Tea Party on Wednesday afternoon. It meant so much to the children that you were able to join us and I hope that you enjoyed your afternoon of biscuit decoration and ‘pin the tail on the corgi’. We are going to be celebrating the Royal Wedding with all other year groups next Friday with a series of special House based activities in Golden Time. Our catering provider ISS is also laying on a special menu for Friday 18th May
Year 2 have an important fortnight coming up as their take their Key Stage 1 SATs. For those parents who were not able to make the Parents’ Information Meetings on Wednesday, the presentation from
this meeting is now available on our website and can be accessed here. We want to ensure that the children do not feel anxious about these assessments, so we will be keeping these days as normal as possible. We will also be organising a series of afternoon activities such as Dance and Martial Arts workshops to give the classes a break.
The booking system for Summer 2 Extra-Curricular is due to open at 6pm on Wednesday 16th May. The school’s website has been updated to show the clubs for next half-term along with a brief description to help you to decide which clubs are most suited to your child’s interests. This information can be found here. The booking system will remain open until 12 noon on Monday 21st May.
I have been working with our catering provider ISS to improve the school dinner arrangements for Key Stage 2 pupils. A new menu for Junior Pupils will be launched after half-term with four choices instead of three. This menu can be found here. The portion sizes are due to be increased and the food will be served on plates and dishes rather than the ‘flight trays’ that pupils have been using since Year R.
Finally, can I finish by reminding families of our high expectations with our school uniform. School shoes need to be black and ‘polishable’ – boots are not allowed. Also, children in Years 1 -3 need to wear their House badge on the left lapel of their blazer every day. Thank you in advance for your continued support.
Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery
This will be the last week we will be covering the topic of Planting and Growth. To bring the topic to a close in class, the children will be planting vegetables and flowers in the pre-school and nursery gardens. We will then discuss and decide who will be involved in caring for our plants.
Learning intentions linked to class subject:
- Listen and follow instructions;
- What does a plant need so it can grow well;
- Know how to care for and be involved in caring for the plants in the gardens.
Words for the week in class are: ‘I’ and ‘in’.
The next topic will be Minibeasts. Children will be looking closely at similarities and differences and trying to identify some of their features.
Finally, I would like to remind you the last day of term is Friday 25th May 2018.
In tutor time on Thursday pupils will receive a letter telling them if they have or have not been successful in meeting the criteria (over 350 achievement points and under 50 behaviour points) to qualify for one of our rewards trips/events taking place on Thursday 21st June. Pupils can book a place on one of the reward trips/events from Monday 14th May – more details on how to do this can be found on the letter pupils receive.
Pupils who have not been successful in meeting the criteria will be given an opportunity to explain to their Head of House why they think they should get qualify for a place on a reward trip/event – more details on this process can be found on the letter that these pupils receive.
