Mr David Jeapes - Headteacher
We are currently preparing the whole school posting which will be sent out over the Easter break. If you have recently moved house or changed your contact details in anyway, please alert us by sending an email to our SIMS Manager, Mrs. Helen Patis on Patis@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk.
With the warmer weather on its way, we actively encourage pupils to bring a healthy drink to school (water or juice). Please note that, under no circumstance will ‘fizzy’ drinks be allowed into school (this includes Lucozade), free water and juice are readily available at lunch times in the canteens.
To help our families plan their time, we have produced an extract of the school calendar containing all of the keys dates for Spring 2. This can be downloaded here.
Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior
We are now in our last few months with Year 11, so there are a lot of key bits of information for them.
Next week they start their last mock examinations in both English and Mathematics. There is a revision breakfast every morning so all pupils need to be in school at 8:15am. A copy of the exam timetable for next week is on the website here.
In addition, next Thursday is the Year 11 Parents Evening. Booking is available on the website here. We would be delighted to see as many parents there as possible.
Looking a little further forward there is a great deal, in terms of revision sessions, on offer over Easter for the pupils to attend. Please do encourage your child to come along to all the sessions that are relevant to them. The timetable is here.
Careers education is in full swing at the moment. Year 10 had a careers networking event this week and next week have a mock interview day. We do have a careers advisor in school who can meet pupils if they have any questions or worries. Please contact Miss Jones on JonesJ1@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk if you have any questions about careers.
We have four teams in the Portsmouth Football Cup Finals. All four finals will be played at Moneyfields with Years 8 and 10 on Tuesday 1st May and Years 9 and 11 on Thursday 3rd May. Please do put these dates in your diary as it would be good to have a great team of supporters there for our pupils.
Year 7 and 8 should be working on their Prep for Spring 2. All the information is on the website here. There is a full list of email addresses for tutors here if you have any questions about what your child should be doing.
Thank you to all of those who have reminded your children that they are not permitted to wear any jewellery at school, other than a single small earring in the lobe of each ear. We have not changed our policy but we are ensuring that the policy is followed by all pupils. Our uniform policy is available on the website here.
Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary
We have loved having so many people in for Family Learning Week this week. It is always a pleasure to welcome parents, grandparents and other family members into the classrooms and the teachers have really appreciated the extra help. I hope that you found these sessions useful and you feel that you are more able to help your child learn at home as a result of coming along.
We have some very exciting events lined up for next week. On Monday, Mrs Johnson is taking a team of Year 3 children to compete in the Portsmouth gymnastics festival. Good luck to the team!
On Tuesday, we have the Infant Voices for the Year 2 choir at the Kings Theatre. This year’s theme is ‘My Dream Job’ and the children are encouraged to dress according to their future career aspirations. We have been working hard to learn all of the lyrics and it is going to be a wonderful evening of singing.
Next Friday, we have our sponsored run in support of Sport Relief and the school’s campaign to buy a defibrillator. There is going to be a 200m track on the school field and we will be encouraging the children to complete at least 8 laps of the track to make the Sport Relief Mile. We will be adding up the distances walked or run by each child in Years 1 -3 and awarding a trophy to the House who manage to cover the longest distance. The work that the Primary children have done for charity this year has been superb. Our most recent charity event was the NSPCC Number Day which raised £640 for this worthwhile cause. Thank you in advance for supporting your child with their sponsorship for Sport Relief.
Hopefully your child is making good progress with their Prep project for Spring 2. The hand-in date for these projects is Monday 26th March and, as ever, I’m really looking forward to seeing the work for this half-term. Please see your child’s teacher if you are not sure what they need to do for Spring 1 Prep.
Can I please remind parents that the House badge is part of the compulsory uniform for Years 1 to 3. Please make sure that your child wears their House badge on the blazer every day. Can you also please ensure that all items of uniform are clearly labelled in case they go missing. After the Easter holidays, children are allowed to wear the summer uniform again. More details about this uniform can be found here: https://mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk/Primary/information-for-parents
Finally, the booking system for Summer 1 Extra-Curricular will open at 6pm on Wednesday 21st March. The clubs will be available to view on our website from 4pm on Monday 19th March.
Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery
Our topic will continue with the theme ‘Pirates’. The children have designed and constructed their boats out of various media and materials. They will now evaluate the work as we investigate whether their boats will float or sink, and adapt their design if it sinks.
- Investigate which materials are waterproof;
- Create a treasure map using mark making implements;
- Investigating magnets - the treasure has sunk to the bottom of the sea, which can we get out by using a magnet;
- Sort out treasure by shape and size;
- Use counting skills to locate where the treasure is buried.
Letter sound is' W'
Words of the week A -To.
Finally, a gentle reminder- please label all your children's items of clothing.
Every Thursday in Tutor time pupils take part in a general knowledge/topical quiz. Pupils are placed into mixed year group teams of 4-5 and compete against the other teams in their tutor group.
Points have been added to the overall house cup competition which now stands at:
A selection of the cast of Little Shop of Horrors performed two songs from the show as part of Mayfield’s contribution to ‘Soundsational’ concert held at Portsmouth’s Guidhall. They then joined with other schools to perform a massed choir.
Milly Gardner in year 11 has created this fantastic final piece in her GCSE Art mock exam!
Milly has experimented with acrylic paint and oil pastels to construct this image. Creating the highlights within the twix was extremely challenging and Milly has done really well.
Tonight at Mayfield are holding a Bingo night! Tickets are available on the door. There are prizes available.
Bring your own drinks and snacks.
