Mr David Jeapes - Headteacher

Welcome back to Spring 2! Over the half term break you should have received a letter from the school with your child’s report. If this did not arrive, or you require a copy, then please email our SIMS Manager, Mrs. Helen Patis on Patis@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk. She will check we have your correct contact details and forward you a copy.

You will be aware that at this time of year schools across the country can be effected by inclement weather. As a timely reminder, please see here some important information about keeping things running smoothly during extreme weather episodes.

Portsmouth City Council and Mayfield school have produced a letter updating our community as to the progress of our new build. Please click here for a copy.

To help our families plan their time, we have produced an extract of the school calendar containing all of the keys dates for Spring 2. This can be downloaded here.

Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior

The first week of the second half of the Spring term is complete. Thank you to all those parents who sent their children back in correct uniform, it has been the best start back after a holiday for a while.

We have had two footballing successes in the Hampshire Cup with both Year 8 and 9 going through to the next round. Well done to the boys and to the staff who manage them.

Year 11 are now on their new Period 0/6 sessions. If you have any questions about where your child should be, please contact Mr Gibson on gibsonr@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk. On Tuesday 27th February we are running a “mock results day” activity for the Year 11 pupils. They will get a summary of their performance in the recent mocks and will also see what results day looks like so when they come in in August they know what to expect.

Year 8 Parents Evening was extremely well attended on Thursday. Thank you to all the parents who came to find out about the Options process and how their child is performing. Please read all the Options information carefully and if you have any questions about the process then contact Mrs Cleary on clearya@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk. If you want to talk about what your child should pick then the best starting point is your child’s tutor. A full list of tutors is available here.

Year 7 Parents Evening is on Thursday 8th March. Please do come in and meet your child’s teachers. Booking is on the website here. If you have any problems booking appointments, please contact reception who will be happy to help you.

Both Year 8 and Year 7 have their Spring 2 Prep projects to be working on. These are on the website here and if you have any questions the full list of tutors is here so you can contact your child’s tutor.

Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary

We had the pleasure of hosting part of the Portsmouth Infant Voices at Mayfield this week. All of Year 2 children took part and enjoyed singing a collection of songs about ‘my dream job.’ We are now moving forward to the final Infant Voices Festival performance at the Kings Theatre in Southsea on Tuesday 20th March when our choir will be singing with children from 20 other local schools.

Next week is our Book Week when we have lots of events planned to promote the love of reading. It is World Book Day on Thursday with the theme for this year being share a story. On Thursday, children are invited to come into school wearing pyjamas ready to share a bedtime story. We are also looking forward to hosting a visit from the West End Theatre Group on Thursday and Friday. They will be

doing a Dance and Drama workshop linked to World Book Day with each class over the course of these two days.

The booking system for this week will open at 6pm on Monday 26th February. Due to limitations on space in the classrooms, can you please only book one session in the week for your child. I will send a text next Friday to let parents know if there are additional spaces available to book if you wish to attend more than one session.

Our Learning Superpower for this half-term is ‘Responsible’ and I was delighted to give out the first Responsible Certificates in this afternoon’s Celebration Assembly.

We are encouraging the children to take responsibility for their home reading this week. It is expected that all children read or share a book at home at least five times per week and this needs to be recorded in the planner so that the teachers can build on this home reading at school. Year 3 children can now be responsible for filling in the planner themselves. Thank you in advance for your support with helping your child to read at home.

Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery

On Monday the appointment sheets will be available to book your slot for parent evening. Due to having a teatime provision the appointments will begin from 6.10pm and it is being held on Thursday the 8th of March. Also just a reminder World Book Day is on Thursday 1st March, children can dress up as their favourite character.

Our topic Chinese New Year Celebrations will come to an end this week. The children have found out some interesting facts about the Chinese New Year looking at traditions, food and superstitions. One of the traditions that takes place is the lion dance. The children have worked really hard, using various

techniques to shape and assemble a dragon, which they will use to recreate the Chinese Lion Dance through the school.

Learning intentions linked to class subject:

  • Initiate new combinations of movement and gesture in order to express feelings;
  • Look at the tradition of the Lion Dance why it’s thought to bring good luck;
  • Create a wish for the Wishing Tree a Chinese tradition. It's believed if the wishes get stuck in the tree and hang from one of the branches, the wish will come true.

Letter sound is 'T'. Please continue to make these lovely collages with your children, so we can discuss these at circle time to help promote speech sounds.

Finally, could I ask if any parent would be able to donate some Chinese Food so we can taste and discuss what one they prefer and compare to the foods that we eat during celebrations.

Geographical Association World Wise Local Quiz

On 7th Feb 6 pupils, in two teams, represented Mayfield in the 2018 World Wise Local Quiz.  It was held at Portsmouth High School, who provided a fantastic buffet tea for everyone.  The questions were set by the Geographical Association and pitched for KS4 pupils with questions from the curriculum they have covered but also tested their worldwide knowledge.  The pupils faced against stiff competition as the only state school invited and performed very well with some very tricky questions.  Some of the questions even made the teachers have to think hard.

All the pupils had a very enjoyable evening, particularly socialising with teams from other schools.

We hope to return next year with new team members as 5 of the 6 participants will have moved on having finished Year 11.

Emily has drawn and painted this stunning Lion design inspired by our animal project. This is a fantastic example of working at depth in art.
