Mr David Jeapes - Headteacher
Over the course of this week we have been putting together our end of term posting. This will include your child’s progress report, complimentary 2018 calendar and a letter from me. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s academic progress, attendance or behaviour then please contact their Tutor (pupils in Seniors) or class teacher (pupils in Infants).
If you have not received your posting home by Tuesday 9th January 2018, please alert us by sending an email to our office manager, Mrs. Steph Manns on Manns@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk.
To help our families plan their time, we have produced an extract of the school calendar containing all of the keys dates for Spring 1.
I would like to end this weeks ‘Mayfield Messenger’ by wishing you all a healthy and happy Christmas and New Year. The next edition will be sent out on Friday 12th January 2018.
Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior
We have all enjoyed the Christmas dinners this week and it is lovely to see each of the Houses come together to share in fun and merriment. The House trees looked splendid and it was particularly heart warming to see the Christmas Hampers arranged by the trees ready for collection. These hampers are all donated to Centrepoint who work with the Homeless in Portsmouth. A big thank you for all the donations that have come in for those from pupils and parents.
We come back to school for a short half-term that includes a complete set of mock exams for Year 11 and "Mayfields" for both Year 8 and Year 9. A copy of the exam timetable can be found on the website. In addition, any Year 10 pupil undertaking ICT as an option will have their real exam on Wednesday 10th January.
Year 7 and 8 have new Prep projects to complete. Year 7 are undertaking projects in English, Music, History and Science with Year 8 having projects in PE, ICT and PSHE. A link to the projects is here and a copy of the projects will be posted home over the Christmas holidays. All resources to support the projects are on Moodle for which there is a link on the website here.
I look forward to welcoming Year 7 and 8 back at 8:10am and Years 9, 10 and 11 back at 8:40am on Monday 8th January. Could parents remind pupils to come back to school in full school uniform - particularly noting the rules around jewellery, hair and make-up including the need to remove false nails before returning.
I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary
Thank you to all of the families who joined us for our annual Carol Concert on Monday evening. It was wonderful that so many of you were able to join us at such a busy time of the year and I’m sure that you all enjoyed the festive singing. Also, thank you to the parents who managed to get down to the Cascades on Wednesday to see the Year 3 Choir sing. I hear that they gave another superb performance!
We have also enjoyed the Christmas dinners this week. It has been great for the Primary children to join with their Houses in the Hall and the festive food seems to have gone down very well.
It has been my pleasure to meet with some children from Year 1 and Year R for a Prep Reward Tea this week. As ever, the standard of the Prep is incredibly high and the children have really enjoyed telling me all about their projects and how they have produced them. I will be hosting Reward Teas for Year 2 and 3 in the first week back.
To support working parents, our Primary sports provider CM Sports are hosting two Activity Days at Mayfield on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th January. Places on these courses can be booked directly with CM Sports and more information can be found here.
We have some staff changes at Christmas in the Primary section. We are saying goodbye and good luck to Dr Hallett, who is moving to a new school, and Miss Leggatt, who is taking up a new role in the Seniors. We also wish Miss Wall well for her maternity leave. After the holidays, we will be welcoming Miss Large as the new teacher for the Nile class and Miss Lee as a Teaching Assistant in Year R.
Best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of the Primary team!
Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery
It's been a busy few weeks in school with lots of events taking place. The Nativity and the Nursery sing a long were lovely mornings, attended by family and friends. The children did really well performing in front of you all, they sang beautifully and remembered all their words.
When we return after the Christmas break the topic will be ‘Winter’. We will explore and investigate change in the environment. Children will explore colour, texture, shape and form in 3 dimensions. We will support the children to articulate their own ideas, helping them to extend their thinking through questioning and play.
Learning intentions linked to class subject:
- Create 3d snowman using various materials extending vocabulary;
- Look at frost using magnifying glasses looking at patterns;
- Make a snowman using various shapes developing mathematical language;
- Work together to create a winter display.
Letter sound for the week is 'M'. Please create a collage and bring into school on Thursday so we can share at circle time. We use these pieces of artwork to promote letter sounds.
We return to school on Monday the 8th January 2018.
Me and my team would like to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Every Thursday in Tutor time pupils take part in a general knowledge/topical quiz. Pupils are placed into mixed year group teams of 4-5 and compete against the other teams in their tutor group.

The Governing Body of Mayfield School with the support of PCC are consulting changing the admissions policy of the school.
Our Primary sports partner 'CM Sports' have organised two activity days at Mayfield at the end of the Christmas holidays. They organised similar days in October half-term which proved very successful and they have further dates planned for the February half-term holidays.
The Christmas dates are on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th January and places can be booked directly with CM Sports.
Maddie created this design above by experimenting with the Batik technique and then using a sewing machine to sew into the outline. This is a new technique we have been using called free machine embroidery and Maddie has made a brilliant start!
