Mr David Jeapes - Headteacher
I do hope you had an opportunity to watch our end of year performance of the “Little Shop of Horrors”. We are all so proud of the cast and crew and special thanks goes out to our performing arts tem for supporting this endeavour.
Next week all pupils will be invited to have a traditional Christmas lunch, served in our Main Hall. We will adjust the timings of the school day to accommodate this event. More details can be found here. We are asking for a voluntary contribution of £2 which can be made via ‘Parent Pay’. Pupils in receipt of a free school meal or infant school meal need not make any further contribution.
The last day of this term is Friday 22nd December. Please note that school will close early to all pupils
at 1.35pm. There will be no extra-curricular activities or tea time club on this day.
Over the Christmas holiday, your child’s report will be sent home with a letter from me. If you have recently moved or changed any of your contact details, then please alert our SIMS manager, Mrs. Helen Patis on Patis@mayfield.portsmouth.sch.uk
To help our families plan their time, we have produced an extract of the school calendar containing all of the keys dates for Autumn 2. This can be downloaded here. A list of FAQ regarding the proposed new build at Mayfield can be found here.
Miss Louise Hillier - Head of Senior
We have had a busy week with the school production- so many of our Senior section pupils were fabulous in it. Well done all! A number of the pupils then went to London on Thursday as a reward for all their hard work and commitment. We are extremely proud of our Performing Arts team.
One last plea before the Christmas holidays to remind pupils who cycle to school to do so safely. Bikes must be "road worthy" with working brakes and pupils must wear a bike helmet for safety. At this time of the year it is very important that pupils are visible as they cycle to school so working lights and a bright jacket are highly recommended.
As we are at the end of term all Year 7 and 8 pupils should be handing in their Prep projects to the relevant subject teacher’s. Your child should get the teacher to sign their planner to acknowledge receipt of the work. New projects will be set for Spring 1.
Mr Matt Stedman - Head of Primary
Thank you for supporting today’s Christmas Jumper Day. The children looked wonderfully festive and your support has helped us to raise another significant amount for a worthwhile cause.
I have been really impressed with the resilience that the children have shown this week. This has been a very long half-term and we have all of the excitement of Christmas coming up, but the focus in the classrooms has been excellent. It was my pleasure to give out our first set of Achievement Awards in Celebration Assembly this afternoon for pupils who have hit a milestone with their Achievement Points. There are four awards to collect during the year:
Bronze – 100 Achievement Points
Silver – 250 Achievement Points
Gold – 500 Achievement Points
Platinum – 1000 Achievement Points
On Monday, we have the Prep hand-in day. I have already seen some pieces that have come in early and the standard is as high as ever. I’m looking forward to seeing a group of children from each class for a Prep Reward Tea next week. Pupils are selected to attend this Reward Tea if they have made an especial effort or produced a particularly outstanding piece of Prep work.
All of our families are invited to join us on Monday at 6pm for our annual Christmas Carol Evening on the Year 1 and 2 playground. We are going to be entertained by our Year 3 choir who have been practising their Christmas songs with Mr Ralls and there will be some traditional carols for us all to sing. Hot chocolate and mince pies will also be available. I hope that you will be able to join us.
Our Year 3 Choir will also be singing in the Cascades on Wednesday lunchtime at 1.00pm. Please do feel free to come along and support them if you are free at that time.
Our Primary sports partner, CM Sports, have organised two activity days at Mayfield at the end of the Christmas holidays. They organised similar days in October half-term which proved very successful and they have further dates planned for the February half-term holidays. The Christmas dates are on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th January and places can be booked directly with CM Sports.
The booking system for Spring 1 Extra-Curricular Clubs is now open until Thursday 21st December. We have some exciting new clubs and providers for the next half-term including Manic Stage Productions who will be delivering a Street Dance club for Year R/1 on Tuesday and Year 2/3 on Wednesday. We also have a new football coach starting with us to deliver a football club for Year R/1 on Mondays. Please book early to avoid disappointment!
Mrs I Edwards - Pre-School & Nursery
What a lovely morning we had at your children's Pre School Nativity. Your children’s performance on stage was amazing. I would like to thank my team for all their hard work during the last couple of weeks, as without their support I couldn't put together such a lovely morning. I would also like to say thank you to the Mayfield staff, for the support we received on the day.
Only one week left don't forget to buy your children's party ticket for Friday 22nd December which is the last day of term. On that day your children will come in for 10am and school closes at 1pm.
Every Thursday in Tutor time pupils take part in a general knowledge/topical quiz. Pupils are placed into mixed year group teams of 4-5 and compete against the other teams in their tutor group.
Last week the winning team from each tutor group competed in the inaugural ‘champion of champions’ quiz in the main hall. The competition was fierce (with some very tough questions) but saw E6 come out on top with a score of 12 out of 20. We look forward to seeing if they can repeat this feat next term!
When all scores had been added up the overall house results were as follows:
Points have been added to the overall house cup competition which now stands at:
The Governing Body of Mayfield School with the support of PCC are consulting changing the admissions policy of the school.

The artist this week is Maisie Clark in Year 9.
Maisie has been very experimental with a new technique called free machine embroidery. This allows you to draw with the sewing machine and create your own designs and shapes. Maisie has confidently created these leaf and tulip shapes for our natural forms project onto cotton.
